Your skin is your biggest organ, it’s multiplex, intelligent and often knows what it needs, do you? In order to achieve optimal skincare, you will need to understand your specific skin type. This will provide insight regarding which products, processes, and conditions work best for you.
On The Posh Blog, I’ll share Sunday Gems, skincare tips to help you flourish. I’ll refer to the skin types below, but first I’ll explain them so you know what skin you're in.

Dry Skin
Dry skin usually feels tight, and the biggest indications are flaking, and very small pores. There’s little to no shine and skin cell turnover is low. This is often due to environmental factors, genetics, lifestyle/diet, and dehydration. Dry skin prohibits a smooth makeup application being as though flaking causes an imperfect surface.
Staying hydrated, daily exfoliation, hydrating and moisturizing products, and promoting cell turnover encourages smooth, healthy skin.
Oily Skin
Oily skin is an incubator for blackheads, pimples, or other blemishes. This paired with large pores and shiny skin is a good indication that you have oily skin. Weather has a great deal to do with how much or little oil your skin is producing, as well as stress, and your current skincare regime.
Excess natural oils can cause sebum build up (breakouts) and often requires exfoliation, but not as often. You must approach care for oily skin cautiously, as the skin is known to overcompensate for oil loss if you over-wash or cleanse.
Normal Skin
Normal skin holds a light sheen of natural oils, it’s smooth with rare breakouts, and is not overly sensitive. Normal skin has a radiant, even complexion and it’s what we aim for throughout our skincare journey.
Normal skin is hydrated, moisturized, balanced and has an even tone. This is what we refer to as Posh skin.
Combination Skin
Combination skin has characteristics of dry, oily, and/or normal skin. In most cases, the T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin) is oily, there are patches of dry skin on cheeks, while the rest is normal. Pores are more noticeable in oily areas, which hold a thick shine, and blemishes may be common.
This type of skin is actually pretty common. You may need to alter care slightly for the different areas but never too drastically. Gentle exfoliating is optimal to balance oily and dry area.
Which are you?
Let’s figure out what skin you have by using the Bare-Faced method:
Cleanse your face thoroughly leaving skin bare (do not apply anything after). After 30 minutes, examine your cheeks, chin, nose and forehead for any shine. After another 30 minutes, evaluate whether your skin feels parched, smile or make other facial expressions to evaluate tightness. If your face feels tight, your skin is likely dry. If there is noticeable shine on your nose and forehead, your skin is mostly likely normal/combination. If there is shine on your cheeks, forehead and nose, you most likely have oily skin.
Starting next week, we'll tackle different remedies and ways of catering to dry, oily, normal, and combination skin. Together we'll discuss exfoliation, moisturizing, hydration, and maintaining perfect, Posh skin. See you next week, Princess!
